how much did you have to pay for alterations on your dress?
I have worked at DB. In our store, the average alteration charge for a wedding gown was about $220. Here’s how that breaks down.
$120 for the hem
$50 for sides
$50 for bustle.
This is an average figure. David’s Bridal tries to price their alterations competitively with other professionals in that geographic area. The prices do vary, according to the economy of the store location.
Benefits of the store – if they damage the dress, they should replace i or repair it. They do this work all the time, and they should know how to do it. When the alterations are complete, there is a complimentary steaming, and the dress is put on a bust form to maintain its shape.
Benefits of an independent tailor: likely more individual attention, will be able to modify features of your dress that DB employees aren’t allowed to. May be more convenient, may cost less.
Any professional should be able to steam your dress when finished. If the local tailor won’t, you may want to call dry cleaners and find out what their charges are for that, before you agree to the tailor doing the work. The price for steaming on top of the tailoring charges may make DB alterations look more appealing. DB will not press dresses that have been altered elsewhere.
