Satin Vest

Satin Vest
Blue and Black? What do you think? ?

I have my bridesmaids wearing navy blue satin dresses and their bouquets will be fuchsia gerbera daisies. My finance would like navy blue vest and tie with a black tux. I suggested that we do a black vest, fuchsia tie with a black tux, that way it will incorporate my theme colors. What do you think???

Don’t focus too much on matching. Prince Charles’ uniform didn’t have to match Diana’s dress, you know.

If it’s a day wedding, the tuxedo is inappropriate–tuxedos are evening-wear, worn after 6:00 P.M. or sundown, whichever comes first. Navy double-breasted suits would be best for the groomsmen. It’s a very classic look; both my grandfathers wore navy double-breasteds to their weddings. Keep the formality up with French-cuff shirts, white pocket squares, boutonnieres (perhaps to match the bouquets), and well-polished black shoes.

If it’s an evening wedding, tuxedos are appropriate, but be careful with adding color. Nine out of ten “personalized” tuxedos are disastrous. The bow tie especially should be black and self-tied. Clip-on bow ties are for strippers, colored bow ties are for clowns, and long ties are for high school students.

Modern vests tend to be too high-cut, so black cummerbunds are preferable. (You can always use the pocket square or boutonniere to add color, though preferably not both.) Vests are fine as long as they easily show two studs. Bad:
